Hanging A Mirror

It is important to be careful and plan how and where you are going to hang a mirror.  A large oak mirror for example is probably a lot heavier than you think and will need more support than other items that you may hang on your wall such as pictures or book shelves.

Most pictures can be hing with a single nail and maybe a picture hook here or there, a mirror may need special fixings and it is therefore important to consider a few things before starting to hand a mirror as the last thing you want is the mirror falling to the floor and smashing.  That would mean 7 years bad luck if you are the superstitious type.

  1. Get some help – Get someone to help you not only with the hanging of the mirror itself but also the positioning to ake sure it is level and at the right height.
  2. Find a suitable location – Decide where you are locating the mirror and think about who will be using it.  If children are using the mirror in additon to adults decide on the right height to put it.
  3. Weight – Make a note of the weight, this will help you decide on the type of fixing you will need.
  4. Type of wall – Find out what the wall is made of that you will be hanging the mirror on.  If it is brick you will probably need some raw plugs and screws, the larger the mirror the larger the fixings.  If the wall is made of plasterboard then things may be a little more complicated as you may need special fixings in order to support the weight. Professional advice may be needed in this case.
  5. Tools – You will need the following depending on the type of wall you are hanging it on: Hammer, Screw Driver, Drill, Spirit Level.
